Word of the Week:
Petrichor

The smell of rain on dry ground.

More specifically, it’s the pleasant smell that often accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather in certain regions. Didn’t you always want a word for it? It was named by two Australian researchers in an article in Nature in 1964, who discovered that the smell is an oily essence that comes from rocks or soil that are often (but not always) clay-based.

The oil is a complicated set of at least fifty different compounds, rather like a perfume. It turned out that the oils are given off by vegetation during dry spells and are adsorbed on to the surface of rocks and soil particles, to be released into the air again by the next rains. I can’t find any record of anybody having tried to bottle and sell it, but can’t help thinking it would be a hot item (my agent’s fee will be the usual modest 10%).

The word comes from Greek petros, a stone, plus ichor, from the Greek word for the fluid that flows like blood in the veins of the gods. So the word means something like “essence of rock”. Alas, it is rarely encountered.

Mmmhhhh, Rain on dry Ground!

Word of the Week:
Flibbertigibbet

A frivolous, flighty, or excessively talkative person.

This is a fine word to throw out, in the appropriate circumstances, though there’s a risk of tripping over all those syllables. That’s no doubt why it has had so many spellings. The original seems to have been recorded about 1450 as fleper-gebet, which may have been just an imitation of the sound of meaningless speech (babble and yadda-yadda-yadda have similar origins).

It started out to mean a gossip or chattering person, but quickly seems to have taken on the idea of a flighty or frivolous woman. A century later it had become respectable enough for Bishop Latimer to use it in a sermon before King Edward VI, though he wrote it as flybbergybe. The modern spelling is due to Shakespeare, who borrowed it from one of the 40 fiends listed in a book by Samuel Harsnet in 1603.

In King Lear Edgar uses it for a demon or imp: “This is the foul fiend Flibbertigibbet. .. He gives the web and the pin, squints the eye, and makes the harelip; mildews the white wheat, and hurts the poor creature of earth”. There has been yet a third sense, taken from a character of Sir Walter Scott’s in Kenilworth, for a mischievous and flighty small child. But despite Shakespeare and Scott, the most usual sense is still the original one.

Have you ever heard of Luis Listonini? He's this imaginary mysterious Artist, that the talented, young (real) Amsterdam Artist Saskia Korsten invented, Luis Listonini was supposed to produce a public Art Project in a new Neighborhood in Zwolle, which turned out to be imaginary too (the Art Project, not the Neighborhood)...needless to say, the Inhabitants were not amused at all (personally, I think it's a hilarious Idea :) !

It's all in your Head!

At least she had the Decency to let an Elephant walk around the Hood, she also produced a Documentary about the whole Project, that was handed out to the potential members of the local Lynch-Mob, (this whole imaginary Art-Project has cost 138 000 of their hard-earned Tax-Euros :) to calm them down!

You are a Sinner! You will go straight to Hell! Pray for Forgiveness! Confess now! Sin sucks!

While at work I have stolen time and office supplies from my employer. As non-intentional as this may have seemed at the time; I am claiming it today as sin and repenting for it!

I swear a lot at home to my spouse. I guess I make poor choices in movies and stuff I watch and just think it's funny. Now I'm constantly afraid I will let something slip in front of my kids or friends.

I am an avid drinker and the problem is it causes no problems in my outward living. I am an over-achiever, great parent, loving spouse; I pay all my bills, tithe, keep all my promises and never miss my time with God, but I hide how much I actually drink.

You suck at Sinning!

My God, these poor Buggers even suck at Sinning....Lord have Mercy on their boring Souls :) ! Maybe you should try to post your Secret elsewhere?

Word of the Week:
Verisimilitude

Verisimilitude (from Latin verisimilitudo, from verus true + similitudo similitude) is the state or quality of something which exhibits the appearance of truth or reality.

In literature, the term denotes the extent to which the characters and actions in a work of fiction exhibit realism or authenticity, or otherwise conform to our sense of reality. A work with a high degree of verisimilitude means that the work is very realistic and believable, that it is "true to life".

Verisimilitude is also the willingness to suspend one's disbelief (even if the events or fictitious representations might otherwise be considered preposterous) when the intensity of the story or interest in the characters overrides the need to believe that things are scientifically correct.
